Highlights 2006
Genco received 15 environmental regulatory approvals during 2006:
- Eight Petroleum Storage Site Licences
- Five Approvals to Operate Wastewater Treatment Systems
- Two Approvals to Operate Domestic Sewage
As a result of the Coleson Cove Generating Station refurbishment in 2005, the following emissions have been reduced:
- SO2 emission rates were reduced by 77% as a result of flue gas desulphurization equipment being installed;
- NOX emission rates were reduced by 70% through modifications to the boiler; and
- Particulate emission rates were reduced by 75% with the addition of the wet electrostatic precipitator.
In 2006, the operation of the Point Lepreau Generating Station avoided emissions of approximately 3.63 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. In addition 58,925 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 12,980 tonnes of nitrogen oxide were avoided.
Transco received 7 environmental regulatory approvals during 2006:
- Helicopter approval from the National Energy Board
- EIA approval from Department of Environment (DoE) for use of helicopter
- Blanket Watercourse and Wetland Alteration Permit
- Three License of Occupation for Protected Areas
- Domestic Sewage Approval for Eel River
NB Power has committed to purchasing up to 400 MW of wind energy and recently entered into agreements for up to 96 MW. NB Power contributed to an International Electric Power Research Institute study on tidal power. The study identified 90 MW of tidal power resources in New Brunswick.
