NB Power is implementing wind energy as a means to meet the Renewable Portfolio
Standard while providing a renewable energy source that has little
environmental impact and does not emit greenhouse gases.
Renewable energy sources are an important part of NB Power’s overall commitment
to the environment, our customers and to our neighbours in communities across
the province. Implementing wind energy is one component and we are pleased to
have accelerated our plans to have up to 400 MW of wind energy.
NB Power asked developers to submit plans to develop, own and operate
wind-powered generation. We looked for wind energy projects that were EcoLogoTM
certified and geographically dispersed in high wind areas across the province.
The five areas proposed for wind development were: the Bay of Fundy, Tantramar,
Miramichi Bay, Acadie / Chaleur, and in-land New Brunswick. These areas are
described as the highest wind areas in New Brunswick and will allow NB Power to
combine the wind energy from a number of wind sites and decrease the
variability in the wind energy that would be produced from a single site.
The development of wind energy projects will increase renewable energy in the
province, resulting in local economic development, increased diversity of power
supply and a greater reliance on domestic resources for electricity generated
and sold in New Brunswick.
