Power Engineering Technologists

Job Functions

Various Power Engineering Technologists (Turbine Engineers, Thermal Engineers and Power Plant Operators) assist in the operation of the generating stations and associated equipment. This includes the operation of boilers, turbo-generators and auxiliary equipment in normal and emergency conditions. These technologists maintain supplies of fuel and feedwater, perform inspections, undertake minor repairs/adjustments, and ensure the station is operating safely.

Job Functions Electrical Engineers working at NB Power are involved in a number of diverse work functions and responsibilities.

  • Planning - load forecasting, voltage profiles, transmission and distribution system expansion, substation and terminal planning
  • Design Services - power plant engineering design, substation and terminal design, transmission and distribution line design

Shared Services Information Systems

Shared Services Information Systems (IS) is the information technology service provider to NB Power. IS supports NB Power's high-speed IT network infrastructure which provides the flexibility to deploy new technology to meet the Corporation's business needs. We are responsible for more than 400 in-house and purchased business applications, including two enterprise resource planning systems.

IS offers multiple, flexible career tracks to employees in order to fulfill our responsibility to:

Power Line Technician

Power Line Technician is a registered apprenticeship trade. Upon successful completion of 7200 hours of employment and training and a final exam, the apprentice is awarded a New Brunswick Diploma of Apprenticeship and a Certificate of Qualification.

NB Power supports and participates in the interprovincial certification program. Persons successfully completing this program will have the inter-provincial seal affixed to their diplomas and identification cards. This seal is recognized by provincial labour and training jurisdictions in all provinces.

Pre-requisite

Completion of the initial 8-9 month Power Line Technician program offered by the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC).

Job Functions

Power Line Technicians construct and maintain electricity distribution and transmission systems. The work involves:

  • erecting and maintaining power poles and towers
  • connecting electricity distribution and transmission networks
  • inspecting/testing overhead and underground power lines and associated equipment
  • adhering to strict safety practices and procedures because of high electricity voltages

Working Conditions

Work is performed in all varieties of weather, at significant heights, and in confined spaces. It requires climbing poles, operating hydraulic buckets and being available to work overtime and respond to after-hours emergencies.

NBCC Program

The 35 week instruction program offered by NBCC is the first phase of the Power Line Technician apprenticeship. Students receive classroom and on-the-job training designed to produce graduates who are qualified to continue through the remaining three years of the apprenticeship program.

Admission Requirements

Persons seeking admission to this program will have completed a high school education or equivalent. Applicants must possess
one of the following:

  • High School Diploma
  • Adult High School Diploma
  • GED Diploma of High School Equivalency

Applicants will be required to undergo a medical examination and must successfully complete physical testing and the A-13 Math test as required by NB Power.

Following successful completion of the NBCC Program, apprentices are required to obtain work (paid) under the direction of a sponsoring employer and qualified journeyperson for the remaining three years of their apprenticeship. In addition to this sponsorship, an apprentice must attend classroom training for six weeks of each year to become fully familiar with the theoretical components associated with materials, tools, principles and skills required, and subsequently receive certification in the Power Line Technician trade.
