Your Questions

My hot water is dirty. What should I do?

Connect a hose on the cold water drain valve (see Product Features) on the bottom of the tank. Drain a few gallons of the water until it appears to run clear.

My hot water has a bad odour. What should I do?

A) If you are connected to the municipal water supply then you should contact the municipality.

B) If you have access to your own well water, for a short-term solution you should contact NB Power or the Department of Environment for a brochure addressing the process of chlorinating well water properly. For a long-term solution, you should have a metal scan of your well water to provide evidence of the equipment necessary to remove minerals that appear to be causing the odour.

What size water heater do I need?

Typically a 40-gallon size water tank is suitable for up to four persons and a 60-gallon size water tank is suitable for five or more. Sizes larger than this may be necessary, and can be tailored to your needs (See Your Options).

Why is the valve on top of my water heater leaking? What should I do?

This safety valve is a pressure / temperature relief (PTR) valve (see Product Features). This valve opens when the pressure in your plumbing system exceeds 125 lbs/sq in, or 550 kPa. If this particular valve appears to be leaking, you should contact NB Power and we will send a repair specialist to come and check your water heater immediately, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

My water is too hot. What should I do?

Your water heater from NB Power is factory set at 140°F or 60°C. Potable water (storage water) should be set at 140°F or 60°C to ensure no threat of a bacterial build up inside the water heater itself. If you want to reduce your water temperature at the point of use, NB Power suggests that you have your plumber install either a mixing valve or a tempering device.

Why should I rent a water heater from NB Power?

When you rent a water heater from NB Power, you are renting a 24-hours a day, 365 days a year service guarantee. This service is one less thing that you need to think about. The monthly rental fee is added to your electric bill making it convenient and worry free. Compared to owning your own water heater, renting can prevent a service call with a fee of around $100.00, plus parts necessary to remedy the problem. Renting from NB Power resolves this issue and creates peace of mind.

Can I connect a solar or other renewable energy source to an NB Power electric water heater?

Yes, it is possible to connect our hot water heaters to a renewable energy source, however as NB Power’s primary concern is for our customer’s safety, these requirements must be met.
