Protecting Your Personal Information
The Province of New Brunswick's new Protection of Personal Information Act
establishes legal requirements regarding the use of personal information. As a
provincially-regulated Crown Corporation, NB Power will meet the highest
standards regarding the use, disclosure and disposal of personal information.
In the interests of its customers and employees, NB Power has worked for many
years to respect the privacy and security of personal information.
Principles of Protection
NB Power's responsibilities towards your personal information are built around
four principles:
-
Consent - The consent of an individual is required for the collection, use or
disclosure of personal information, except where such information is necessary
to protect the health, safety or security of an individual or the public in
general.
-
Collection - The collection of personal information is limited to that which is
necessary to the purposes of NB Power, i.e., directly relating to an existing
or proposed activity of NB Power.
-
Disclosure - Personal information is to be used or disclosed for the purpose
for which it was collected, unless the individual expressly consents otherwise
or such disclosure is required by law.
-
Retention - Personal information is to be retained only as long as necessary to
fulfill the purpose required by NB Power or the law.
Security Policy
NB Power has a Security Policy for the protection of personal information that
provides guidance to all employees on the safeguarding of personal information.
There is also a policy regarding the Release of Customer and Employee
Information. The importance of the protection of personal information is also
referenced in the Corporation's Code of Ethics.
Since the Protection of Personal Information Act was proclaimed, NB Power's
Corporate Steering Committee on Protection of Personal Information has
completed information sessions to inform employees about their responsibilities
to protect confidential information.
