Winners of our annual Earth Day Conservation Education Challenge 2010
NB Power is committed to educating customers about the importance of electricity conservation, and one way to do that is by engaging New Brunswick youth. In February, NB Power launched its third annual Earth Day Conservation Education Challenge. Middle school students across the province were asked to demonstrate what we all can do to help achieve a sustainable future for the earth and how NB Power can help promote conservation education in their schools.
The students submitted their ‘paperless proposals’ on USB keys, presenting their ideas through various forms of multimedia including PowerPoint presentations, audio and video files.
On April 22, a total of 15 schools received Earth Day awards:

FACES Program
NB Power is pleased to partner with District 18 schools for the Families And Communities Enriching Schools (FACES) program. NB Power has recently partnered with one of the community schools involved with this program, the Devon Middle School, for a pilot with plans to explore other opportunities to support schools across the province. The FACES program is a partnership that families, the business community and services agencies have established with schools to offer support in the form of volunteers and/or financial assistance.
PALS Program
NB Power is also involved in the Partners Assisting Local Schools ( P.A.L.S.) program in Saint John, NB. Through this program, companies in the Saint John area are paired with schools and provide support in the way of volunteers or financial assistance.
New Brunswick Community College (NBCC)
NB Power has enjoyed a positive working relationship with the New Brunswick Community College (NBCC) for many years. In addition to having established the NB Power Specific Apprenticeship Programs and the Co-op Student Program, we have worked with NBCC to help establish the addition of two programs:
1 – Employers and Students – Partners in Business Program
2 – Instructor and Employee Exchange Program
Shad Valley
Shad Valley is a national summer enrichment program for youth, focusing on the sciences, technology and entrepreneurship. Top, well rounded students from across Canada are selected to the program for a challenging, inspirational opportunity that provides learning and growth that lasts a lifetime. Students spend one month living in residence at one of 12 host university campuses across Canada where, working in teams, they create and design a product for market, and develop the full business plan for that product development and sale. They then go on to five week internship placements at select host companies across the country to gain real, first hand experience in the work world.
Thanks to a partnership with Shad Valley, six youths (four interns and two alumni) gained valuable and meaningful experience working at different locations throughout NB Power in 2007. In 2008, NB Power will be hosting eight Alumni students.
