Street Lights

There are currently approximately 68,000 street lights in operation, 86% of which are low consumption lights (100W).

Re-lamping program
Since 2007, as part of a re-lamping program, lamps are being changed in street light heads from a High Pressure Sodium (HPS) cycling lamp with a 24,000 hour lamp-life to a non-cycling lamp with an extended lamp life of 30,000 hours, representing a 25% increase over the standard HPS lamp life. This will eliminate one year from the maintenance cycle while also making it easier to identify lamps that need replacing. In addition, the new lamps contain up to 90% less mercury than standard HPS lamps, and they are lead free.

City of Fredericton
Work continues with the City of Fredericton to reduce the bulb wattage in their 150 W and 200 W street lights. This project is still in progress and will continue to show significant energy savings without compromising safety on city streets.

Refurbishment
Street lights are maintained and refurbished in an efficient and cost effective manner. By refurbishing 100 watt lights this prevents older lights from being disposed of. The cost of refurbishment is less than 65% of the cost of new lights, therefore it is also cost-effective.

Future Initiatives
New technology in Roadway Lighting is continuing to be studied, such as LED cobraheads, LED lamps, street light dimming and new 70 watt heads.

LED/Energy Saving Pilot Projects
New Lighting Technologies and ways to save energy are being explored. New lights are being tested in 14 locations across the province, including:

Fredericton
Grand Falls
Woodstock
St. Stephen
Oromocto
Bathurst
Tracadie
Dalhousie
Miramichi City
