Top Ten Energy Saving Tips
- Turn electric baseboard heaters off at the electrical panel until the start of the heating season.
- Don't over heat. Turn thermostats back at night and when away for longer periods during the day.
- Use window kits to increase the performance of windows in your home.
- Fix leaking hot water pipes and faucets.
- Wash with cold water whenever possible.
- If it's not in use, turn it off. This includes lighting, computers, TVs, fans, etc.
- Unplug that old, empty fridge or freezer.
- Replace conventional incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) where possible. Replace old Christmas lights with LEDs.
- When replacing old appliances, look for the Energy Star label.
- Operating times of certain devices should be closely monitored. Be aware that devices such as air conditioners, dehumidifiers, pumps, car heaters, heating cable, heat recovery ventilators and others can have a major impact on your bill. Consider timers as an option for some of them.
