NB Power and Public Safety exercise response plans during Community Preparedness Week

2015-11-16

Fredericton, N.B. – NB Power and New Brunswick’s Emergency Measures Organizations (NBEMO) will test nuclear emergency response plans in a full scale, multi-jurisdictional exercise November 17 and 18.

In addition, NB Power is testing emergency response plans related to grid reliability and stability through a North America-wide table-top exercise among power operators November 18 and 19.

These exercises are part of New Brunswick’s annual Community Preparedness Week, when residents are reminded to check emergency plans, make sure family members know the plans and emergency equipment and supplies in the home are in good working order in advance of the winter storm season.

“We always encourage our customers to be prepared for extreme events, and it is just as important for the utility to test emergency plans and procedures regularly,” said Gaëtan Thomas, NB Power President and CEO. “These exercises will demonstrate that New Brunswickers can be confident in the collective emergency response capabilities of NB Power and the Province of New Brunswick.”

As part of Community Preparedness Week, NB Power and NBEMO are hosting a series of “Let’s Talk About Extreme Weather” public information sessions throughout northern New Brunswick during the first week of December. These annual sessions help New Brunswickers prepare their homes and families for the impacts of extreme winter weather.

“All New Brunswickers are reminded to exercise emergency plans and ensure they are prepared for whatever scenario comes their way,” said Stephen Horsman, Minister of Public Safety. “Our residents can also be confident that Government is working closely with NB Power and other agencies to ensure the needs of New Brunswickers are met in a coordinated and predictable way following an extreme event.”

Preparedness tips are available online at www.NBPower.com and through the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization.
