NB Power restoration update

2016-02-25

Fredericton, N.B. –  NB Power and contractor crews continue to make progress restoring power following the February 24-25 freezing rain event affecting Central and northern New Brunswick.

The majority of customers affected by the storm are expected to have power restored by this evening. Customer outages peaked at approximately 15,000 early Thursday.

In some areas, lightning strikes are delaying the restoration effort.

Meanwhile, the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station continues to operate at 100 per cent power in a safe and steady state after crews responded to smoke alarms triggered by a lightning strike near a service building on Thursday morning.

The station experienced a strong thunder and lightning storm which affected some electrical equipment servicing support areas.

No fire or smoke has been detected or confirmed, however employees were evacuated from two service buildings as a precaution. Some non-essential employees were sent home due to power and network outages.

There are no issues with station operations and no safety concern for the public or station staff.
