Licence Renewal 2017

The process to renew the Power Reactor Operating Licence (PROL) for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS) is underway.

In June 2016, NB Power applied for a five-year PROL issued by an independent federal nuclear regulator, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The current PROL expires in June 2017. NB Power is preparing for a two-part public hearing process which begins in early 2017. The hearings will be open to the public and streamed live on the CNSC website.

The CNSC is assessing the licence application to ensure that the safety measures meet the regulatory requirements and that necessary safety measures and equipment are in place to protect the employees, public and the environment.

Part 1 of the hearing occurred on January 26, 2017, in Ottawa, ON. It involved presentations from NB Power and CNSC staff to the CNSC Commission. Commission Members questioned both parties about the information that was submitted and presented.

Part 2 of the hearing occurred May 9-11, 2017, in Saint John, NB. The Commission Members continued the hearing process with participation from NB Power and CNSC staff. During Part 2, 40 registered intervenors had the opportunity to make presentations to the CNSC Commission.

On June 15, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced that a five-year Power Reactor Operating Licence (PROL) had been granted to NB Power for PLNGS. Read more here.
