Synergy Challenge 2018
NB Power’s Power Reactor Operating Licence granted by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station (PLNGS) requires a full-scale emergency exercise to be held every three years.
NB Power’s partner for emergency response to an emergency with off-site implications is the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization (NB EMO).
Together, NB Power and NB EMO held a multi-tier and jurisdiction emergency exercise on October 3 and 4, 2018 called Synergy Challenge 2018.
This exercise tested emergency preparedness, response and recovery capabilities and decision making by NB Power and NB EMO. This exercise demonstrated the collaborative effectiveness, response and recovery capabilities of NB Power, NBEMO, and emergency response partners.
The top level objectives for Synergy Challenge 2018 included:
- Validating the preparedness of NB Power, PLNGS, government and non-government organizations and agencies to respond to a nuclear emergency
- Testing the interoperability of participating organizations and coordination of response and recovery efforts
- Validating current on-site and off-site Nuclear Emergency Plans
- Producing a joint evaluation report on the interoperability, coordination, and integration of participating organizations during a simulated nuclear emergency at PLNGS.
Synergy Challenge 2018 demonstrated the overall preparedness for a nuclear emergency. Ensuring NB Power and the Government of New Brunswick, through NB EMO and other departments, are aligned and well-rehearsed in emergency response activities.
