Financial Incentives

The Energy Smart Commercial Buildings Retrofit Program provides financial incentives of up to $3,000 towards an evaluation to determine the potential for energy efficiency upgrades in a commercial building and a maximum of $75,000 towards energy retrofitting projects that result in measureable electricity savings.

Incentives vary by building category as outlined below

Building Categories

Building Size

Class 1 (Small)

Class II (Medium)

Class III (Large)

Up to 15,000 square feet or 1,394 square metres

15,000 to 75,000 square feet or 1,394 to 6,968 square metres

75,000 square feet and larger or 6,968 square metres and larger

Audit Incentive
(audit determines potential for energy efficiency upgrades)

50% of energy audit cost up to $1,000

50% of energy audit cost up to $2,000

50% of energy audit cost up to $3,000

NB Power has developed a custom approach for Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) and their respective pumping/lift stations. WWTPs are eligible to receive 50% of their energy audit costs up to $2,000. Pumping/Lift stations are considered part of their respective treatment facility and are eligible for an additional audit incentive of 50% of audit costs up to $1,000 maximum total for all associated pumping stations

Retrofit Incentive
(based on estimated annual electricity savings determined by audit)

$30/GJ saved (up to a maximum of $75,000)

The incentive for the implementation of energy efficiency measures is based on amount of electricity saved. Each water and wastewater treatment plant is eligible for an incentive of $30/GJ saved up to a maximum of $75,000. The group of associated pumping stations for each water and wastewater treatment plant are also eligible for an incentive of $30/GJ saved up to a maximum of $75,000

A gigajoule (GJ) is a metric term used for measuring energy use. For example, 1 GJ is equivalent to the amount of energy available from 277.8 kWh of electricity
