Safe and Prepared
The Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station operates a CANDU reactor - among the safest in the world.
To add to the qualifications workers require to be able to work in the nuclear plant, there are redundancies built into the systems to keep workers, public and environment safe.
There are backup power supplies and a backup control room. CANDU reactors are also equipped with four Special Safety Systems, which are designed to operate when the reactor needs to safely shutdown.
In the unlikely event of a loss of all power, there is an Emergency Power Supply (EPS) used to keep power to safety-related systems built into the station required to control, cool and contain the fuel. The EPS is seismically and environmentally qualified and has sufficient fuel stores to operate unaided for a seven-day period.
