Site-specific seismic hazard assessment update

December 2012

When the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) renewed the Point Lepreau Generating Station's (PLGS) Power Reactor Operating Licence, the Commission made the completion of a site-specific seismic hazard assessment a condition of the Station's licence renewal. NB Power was also mandated by the CNSC to share the results of this assessment as part of its public information program.

Since early 2012, PLGS staff have worked with third-party experts on the site-specific seismic hazard assessment. Seasonal factors make it impossible to complete all data gathering until summer of 2013 so the final assessment report will be issued in 2014. Meanwhile, the preliminary findings offer reassurance about the safety of the Station.

Preliminary findings of the seismic assessment indicate that the current understanding of the earthquake hazard for the Point Lepreau site is not substantially different than that presented in a 1984 study. As a result, we believe that the safety case for PLGS remains strong. The Station is sound and will continue to operate safely.
