NB Power advances next phase of planning for MLAP turbines and generators

FREDERICTON, N.B. - NB Power has signed an agreement with Andritz Canada Inc. to advance the turbine and generator component of the Mactaquac Life Achievement Project (MLAP), another important milestone to keep the station operating as one of New Brunswick’s most critical sources of electricity.

This agreement supports work related to the rehabilitation and modernization of Mactaquac’s generating units, including its turbines, generators and associated systems that are at end-of-life. The work is part of the broader MLAP, which will address deterioration in the station’s concrete structures and upgrade critical equipment needed for long-term operation.

“This agreement represents another responsible, needed step in the planning and preparation for a project of this size and importance,” said Lori Clark, President and CEO of NB Power. “New Brunswickers expect us to make careful, informed decisions about major investments in our electricity system. By advancing this work now, we are continuing to better understand the technical requirements, schedules and risks associated with the project before final decisions are made.”

Mactaquac Generating Station plays a vital role in NB Power’s generation fleet and in supporting reliable, renewable electricity for customers. The Mactaquac Life Achievement Project is intended to ensure the station can continue to provide value for New Brunswickers for decades to come.

Any future major project activities remain subject to government review and regulatory requirements. These processes are an important part of determining the best long-term path forward for customers and New Brunswick’s electricity system.

Preparatory work and product testing work is underway at the site to prepare for future project activities. NB Power will continue to provide updates as planning and regulatory reviews progress.
