Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM)

Project Background

NB Power is advancing its Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) project at the Salisbury Terminal to strengthen the electricity system in southern New Brunswick. STATCOM is proven technology that will enhance reliability, keep power flowing consistently, and support continued growth in the region.

Electricity demand in southern New Brunswick continues to grow, and the power system is becoming more complex. To date, the grid does not always have enough fast‑acting voltage support to respond to certain events. Strengthening voltage support at Salisbury will help ensure the system can withstand disturbances and continue to operate reliably.

Why It Matters

This project will improve power reliability for homes, businesses, and essential services in Salisbury and the southeastern part of the province. By strengthening the electrical system today, NB Power is investing in a more resilient grid that can support future economic growth and community development.

Project Benefits

The STATCOM project offers several benefits for customers and the community:

  • Strengthens the electricity system and overall system reliability in Salisbury and surrounding areas
  • Uses proven, reliable technology already in service around the world
  • Integrates easily with existing grid infrastructure
  • Has a small footprint and low levels of audible and electrical noise
  • Supports future growth and development in the region

What’s Next

STATCOM will be located at NB Power’s existing Salisbury Terminal in the Town of Salisbury. Most construction activities will take place within the current substation. This will help minimize impacts to nearby residents and the rest of the community.

The project was reviewed and approved by the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) in the summer of 2025.  Early site activities, including vegetation clearing, were completed in late 2025. Additional construction activities, such as foundations, equipment installation, and commissioning, will happen in phases. The STATCOM project is expected to be completed by the end of 2028.
