NB Power to begin Planned Maintenance Outage at Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station
2026-04-09
Point Lepreau (NB) — NB Power will begin a planned maintenance outage at the Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station on Friday, April 10, as part of an ongoing commitment to ensure the station continues to operate safely, reliably, and efficiently for New Brunswickers.
Planned outages are a vital part of nuclear facility operations as they provide the opportunity to inspect and service equipment that cannot be accessed while the station is online. This proactive maintenance will help ensure the station continues to meet rigorous safety standards while achieving long-term sustained performance.
More than 20,000 tasks are scheduled for the 2026 outage, which is expected to last 119 days. The work will involve a coordinated effort from plant staff and specialized contractors, contributing to the local economy while reinforcing a culture of safety and excellence. Highly skilled teams will carry out a comprehensive scope of work, including detailed inspections, pump and motor maintenance, and electrical system testing. As part of the outage, NB Power will also take the opportunity to advance work related to potential future isotope production at the station.
“This outage represents a significant investment in the future of Point Lepreau,” said Steve Bagshaw, Chief Nuclear Officer and Site Vice President. “Completing this important work today helps strengthen performance, sustain reliability and manage costs over time. It’s about delivering safe, clean, reliable energy that supports long term affordability for our customers.”
During the outage, NB Power will continue to serve customers using a diverse mix of generation resources across the province. Costs associated with the outage will be included in NB Power’s annual financial statements, which are publicly available.
PLNGS has been generating safe, clean electricity since 1983. It is a critical part of New Brunswick’s energy mix and a major contributor to the provincial economy, supporting hundreds of jobs and local suppliers. The majority of station expenditures go to employees, contractors and suppliers, most of whom live and operate in New Brunswick.
NB Power remains committed to sharing information as work progresses, and to ensuring New Brunswickers have the electricity they need when they need it.
