Why is NB Power introducing a monthly fee?

Non-standard meters require manual reading, additional maintenance, and operational support. The monthly fee covers these additional costs and ensures fairness to all customers.

How can I avoid the fee?

You can switch to a smart meter at anytime to avoid the fee. 

Is there a charge to switch to a smart meter?

No. There is no charge to switch to a smart meter. 

How long will it take to receive a smart meter?

Most smart meters will be installed within 30 days of receiving your request. 

Who can request a meter change?

The property owner must request the meter change.  

How do I know if I already have a smart meter?

Customers receiving communications about the monthly fee currently do not have a smart meter. If you are unsure, contact Customer Care at 1-800-663-6272. 

Will a smart meter increase my bill? 

No. Your bill is based on how much electricity you use, not the type of meter on your property. 

Can I keep a non-standard meter?

Yes. Customers may choose to keep a non-standard meter and pay the monthly fee. Existing non-standard meters will remain in service as long as they continue to operate safely, effectively, and maintain certification requirements.  

If a replacement meter is required, the meter will be replaced with a smart meter with the communications features turned off. 

What happens if I choose to keep a non-standard meter?

Customers who choose to keep a non-standard meter after September 1, 2026, can expect: 

  • A monthly opt-out fee of $4.65
  • Manual meter readings every two months
  • Estimated bills between readings
  • Bill adjustments after the next reading is taken

Does the fee apply to all NB Power customers?

No. The fee only applies to customers who choose to keep a non-standard meter. Customers with a smart meter will not be charged this fee. 

I rent my home. Does this fee apply to me?

The decision to request a smart meter or remain on a non-standard meter rests with the property owner. If you have questions about your property, please contact your landlord. 

Can I switch later?

Yes. You can request a smart meter at any time.
