Plug-In NB - Electric Vehicle Rebates

Due to New Brunswickers' enthusiasm for the new EV rebate, processing may take longer than expected. We appreciate your patience as we process your rebate application.

Rebates for Battery Electric Vehicles, Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles and EV home charging stations

Are you shopping for a Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) or Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle (PHEV) combined with an electric vehicle home charging station? You could qualify for rebates available through Plug-In NB (the New Brunswick Electric Vehicle rebate Program) and the iZEV Program from the Government of Canada.

Transportation represents a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions in New Brunswick. The Climate Change Action Plan identifies actions to help reduce our impact on the climate. NB Power is proud to be working on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick to encourage New Brunswick drivers to purchase an electric vehicle. By replacing gas cars with electric vehicles, we reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from the vehicles we drive. The goal of this rebate program is to increase the number of electric vehicles in New Brunswick and meet the target of 20,000 electric vehicles on the road by 2030.

Starting July 8, 2021, rebates are available to New Brunswickers who purchase or lease a qualifying new or purchase a used electric vehicle at a licensed automobile dealership in New Brunswick. Those who purchase an eligible vehicle can also receive a rebate on the purchase and installation of a home charging station.

Eligible New Vehicles

The rebate for new EVs will apply to the same makes and models as in the Government of Canada iZEV program.

Specifically, the rebate will apply to:

  • vehicles with six (6) seats or fewer, where the base model (trim) Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is less than $45,000. Higher priced versions (trims) of these vehicles, up to a maximum MSRP of $55,000, will also be eligible for a rebate; and
  • vehicles with seven (7) seats or greater, where the base model MSRP is less than $55,000. Higher priced versions (trims) of these vehicles, up to a maximum MSRP of $60,000, will also be eligible for a rebate.

Please see the list of eligible vehicles available from the iZEV program.

In all cases, to be eligible for a new EV rebate, all vehicles must also:

  • meet all federal and provincial motor vehicle safety standards;
  • be intended for use on public streets, roads, and highways; and
  • have at least four functioning wheels and be highway capable (e.g., not a low-speed vehicle).

Note that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and electric motorcycles, scooters and off-road vehicles are not eligible for rebate.

*Only electric vehicles purchased or leased from a licensed vehicle dealership located in New Brunswick are eligible for rebates. The sole exception is for models (such as Tesla) that currently can only be ordered online because there is no physical dealership located in the province.

  • licensed dealerships will be required to share the VIN with the Program Administrator to allow for verification of whether the EV has previously had the used EV rebate ;
  • the retail price for a used BEV must be between $10,000 and $55,000, regardless of what its original MSRP was;
  • the retail price for a used long-range or short-range PHEV must be between $10,000 and $40,000, regardless of what its original MSRP was;
  • BEVs have been inspected to evaluate the residual capacity of their batteries with respect to their initial capacity and this information must be disclosed to customers in writing on the bills of sale prior to sales being finalized;
  • the EV meets all federal and provincial motor vehicle safety standards;
  • the EV is intended for use on public streets, roads, and highways;
  • the EV has at least four functioning wheels and is highway capable (e.g., not a low-speed vehicle).

Home Charger Rebate

Residents or organizations who receive a vehicle rebate through the Plug-In NB Rebate Program are eligible to claim 50% of the cost to purchase and install one new level 2 EV charger, up to a maximum of $750.

To be considered for this program and be on the list of eligible charging stations, the station must:

  • Be a new purchase
  • Be a level 2 (208-240V) home charging station
  • Be approved by an accredited Canadian certification body (cUL, ULC, cETL, CSA, CQPS)
  • Have network connectivity using open source protocol
  • Installed by a licensed electrician

The number of charging station incentives are limited to the number of EV incentives received by a resident or organization in a 12-month period.

The EV VIN is required to claim the incentive. The name on the invoice must match the name on the EV registration(s) and must be from a Canadian supplier.

List of eligible Chargers

The Plug-In NB Rebate Program does not endorse any particular manufacturer or brand. We recommend individuals do their own research to ensure the charger meets their needs. This list is not exhaustive. If you do not see a particular charger on this list and it meets the above criteria, please contact us for a review.
