Shediac Smart Energy Community Project

Bringing value to customers with the Town of Shediac

NB Power is serving New Brunswickers by investing in projects that keep our grid strong and our rates reasonable while we transition to cleaner energy.

In Shediac, we’re working with homeowners, the municipality, and the federal government on a community energy project that’s helping determine how to add solar energy to the grid in a way that brings the best value to all customers.

The project launched in 2018 and will continue until 2024.

The Shediac Smart Energy Community Project has three parts:

Residential Energy Study

We’ve partnered with more than 400 Shediac homeowners to install and test energy technology that includes solar and battery energy storage systems, and smart thermostats.

Converting Two Commercial Buildings to Net-Zero

We’re adding solar panels, battery energy storage and energy efficiency upgrades to two important Shediac buildings – the Shediac Multipurpose Centre and the Government of Canada Pension Centre. These buildings will be connected to a solar farm within town limits. The goal is to reduce energy use and increase reliance on renewable energy. These buildings will be New Brunswick’s first net-zero commercial buildings.

Community Solar Farm

Built within Shediac town limits, NB Power’s first grid-connected, 1.63 megawatt (MW) solar farm is designed to provide clean electricity to the Shediac Multipurpose Centre and the Government of Canada Pension Centre with excess electricity flowing into the community via the distribution system.

The Shediac Smart Energy Community Project is part of Smart Grid Atlantic, a four-year, federally funded initiative supporting energy technology projects in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.
